A circular arrangement of navy, ivory, silver and gold segments representing diversification.

“Gold IRA or gold ETF?” sounds like a straightforward comparison. There is one distinction to clear up first: an IRA is an account, while an ETF is an investment product. An eligible ETF may itself be held inside an IRA.

The practical comparison is often physical gold held through a self-directed IRA versus a gold-focused exchange-traded product.

Write down your goal

Are you interested in exposure to gold prices, a particular ownership structure, or something else? Start there before comparing advertisements.

Compare how each works

For physical holdings, ask about the account administrator, storage arrangement, purchase process, and sale process.

For an exchange-traded product, read what it actually owns. A product holding bullion differs from one holding mining-company shares or using derivatives. Review the prospectus, expenses, and trading risks. ETF shares trade at market prices during the trading day; the price can differ from the value of underlying assets.

Use the same questions

For either option, ask: What do I own? How do I sell? What does it cost? What could go wrong? Avoid comparing one option's best feature with the other's worst feature.

Your next step

Write a one-sentence goal and compare both routes against it. The better fit depends on the product and your situation, not on which label sounds more reassuring.

Wishing you a secure and prosperous retirement,
