One of the easiest ways for a retiree to overpay for gold is not through an obvious fee. It is through the premium on the coins being sold.

A premium is the amount paid above the melt value of the metal. Some premium is normal. Very high premiums deserve a much closer look.

Why premiums matter

If a coin contains a certain amount of gold, its baseline value is tied to the gold content. But dealers may charge more based on rarity, collectibility, demand, or sales markup.

For a retirement account, this can become a problem if the investor believes they are buying simple gold exposure but is actually paying collectible-style pricing.

IRA-eligible does not always mean sensible

A coin may be eligible for an IRA and still not be the most cost-efficient choice. Retirees should be careful when a salesperson emphasizes special editions, scarcity, or “exclusive” opportunities.

Those phrases are not automatically bad, but they should trigger a simple question: how much am I paying above the metal value?

Ask for the spread

The spread is the difference between what you pay to buy and what you could receive if you sold back immediately. A high spread means the gold price may need to rise significantly just for you to break even.

Before buying, ask for both the purchase price and the current buyback indication. Get it in writing.

The takeaway

Retirees do not need to become coin experts. They do need to avoid confusing retirement investing with collectible shopping.

For many Gold IRA buyers, clear pricing, common IRA-eligible bullion, and written buyback terms matter more than a dramatic sales story.

Wishing you a secure and prosperous retirement,
