A useful sales conversation should leave you with clearer information. If you feel rushed instead, it helps to have a few sentences ready.

Start with a boundary

“I am gathering information today. I will review it before making a decision.”

You do not need to defend that approach. A retirement decision deserves enough time for you to understand it.

Ask these five questions

  1. What exactly are you proposing that I buy?

  2. Can you send the complete offer and charges in writing?

  3. What assumptions are behind the example you are showing me?

  4. What happens if I decide this is unsuitable later?

  5. Which details should I review with my own adviser?

Give yourself an exit

If the call becomes repetitive, say: “Thank you. Please email the information. I will contact you if I want to continue.”

Write down what remains unanswered before you read the follow-up. That keeps the conversation focused on your questions rather than the next pitch.

Your next step

Keep this script near your phone. Investor.gov identifies pressure to act immediately as an investment-fraud warning sign. A deadline should prompt closer scrutiny, not replace your judgment. You can end a conversation without making a financial decision.

Wishing you a secure and prosperous retirement,
